Progress
These are all of my projects for the semester. I really enjoyed tapping into my creative side to pull out ideas and designs. This class has enhanced my creativity and skill. I learned plenty of new things throughout the semester. I can't wait to decorate my room with all of my projects and possibly make more to decorate our apartment. I would have to say my favorite project was my initials. Everything about it just screamed me and I love how I executed it. I'm going to miss this class and my fellow classmates. I hope everyone enjoyed this class as much as I did and enjoy the break!

This is my final brochure. I'm really happy with how it came out. Professor Amy suggested that I dress up the front but I really just love how classic and simple the first page is. Everyone practically knows the Girl Scout logo. This was actually fun to put together, finding the facts and looking at all these delicious cookies. Playing with the leading and alignment took some time but I'm it really helped everything come together and look cleaner. School's over. Projects done. Im happy.

These were some cool brochures I came across while looking for some inspiration. I love the pop out effect and map on the first brochure its cute and clever. The second brochure has beautiful artwork on it. I wonder what program they used to give it that painting effect. It makes me wish I can draw or at least have skill in photoshop or illustrator to do such. This class has opened me up to endless possibilities of what can be done with adobe. The third brochure which is the last two images is a fun and quirky idea. I love that its personal but it also engages its reader. The colors and patterns are very bright and playful which adds to the title and feel of the brochure.

Girl Scouts
ITS GIRL SCOUT COOKIES TIME! I love this time of the year where girl scouts all over sell their delicious cookies. I'm addicted to Thin Mints and use to be a girl scout so I decided to focus my brochure on this. This idea also made it easier to find pictures and information so I'm pretty excited to see how it turns out.
I'm wondering if I wanna focus on the Girl Scout organization as a whole, or just the cookies. To focus on it as a whole may require diluting a lot of information for which little space I did have. Plus who doesn't like cookies? I figured I could make it playful and colorful. Yet still focus on little facts and information about both the organization and cookies.
I'm just hoping to finish thing last project with a bang!

Redoing instant book
I loved my instant book idea but unfortunately I forgot to decorate the inside. So Im kind of stuck on what to put inside. I was thinking about doing a flow chart fun survey but Im not sure how that incorporates my theme.

Bittersweet Feeling
This last critique is bringing on a bittersweet feeling. YES, I'm definitely happy the semester is almost over and I don't have to think about classes anymore. BUT, this class was actually fun. Learning different techniques on Photoshop and Indesign was a major plus. Especially since I've always wanted to dabble in T-Shirt designing. My favorite part about doing these assignments were the critiques. So I'm super excited to see how much everyone has progressed. So bring your A game and pretty brochures :)
Also enjoy your break and for those who are graduating, Congratulations.

Brochure Frustrations
At first I thought my idea to do my brochure on the Seven Chakras was good because it was different. But, looking around at everyone's projects made me want to change mine. Plus finding images suitable for print design was difficult. I was a little stuck with if I should change my idea and what should I change it to. Since its due in such short time, I was going to stick it out but finding one good image was being a mission. I was stuck and back at step one with the time still ticking. I had to find a organization or idea that I was passionate about yet simple.

Process of Making Poster
Since the holidays are coming up I wanted to incorporate Christmas and promote stopping second hand smoke. Coming up with the concept was easy but finding images that would fit the resolution and be large enough to use was hard. I wanted to find a image that showed someone who's repulsed at a Christmas gift they got. Then I had to decide if I wanted to go with a plain white background and decorate it with a Christmas theme. Or go with a red and green background.

Anti Smoking Ad Inspiration
An estimated 21% of all adults (45 million people) smoke cigarettes in the United States. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, is a complex mixture of gases and particles that include smoke from the burning cigarette, cigar, or pipe tip (sidestream smoke), and exhaled mainstream smoke. Secondhand smoke contains at least 250 known toxic chemicals, including more than 50 that can cause cancer. Secondhand smoke causes heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults and a number of health conditions, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and respiratory infections, in children.
More than 126 million nonsmoking Americans continue to be exposed to secondhand smoke in homes, vehicles, workplaces, and public places. Most exposure to tobacco smoke occurs in homes and workplaces. Almost 60% of U.S. children aged 3–11 years—or almost 22 million children—are exposed to secondhand smoke.

These are some print ads I ran across on the internet that were interesting and clever, that I decided to share. Graphic communication and advertising must be a hard yet fun job.

Helvetica
Helvetica is a film that explores the world of typeface and graphic design. It is a film about one of the most universal type-faces in the world. This film was easy to enjoy because everyone was very passionate about their views, whether they were for or against Helvetica. It's ironic how this film was used to bring recognition to a typeface that wasn't necessarily designed to stand out. The design of Helvetica is clean, well balanced and easy to read. It's used in various signs, logos, and other print media. Its crazy how often its used and we don't realize.
Rick Poynor: Type is saying things to us all the time. Typefaces express a mood, an atmosphere. They give words a certain coloring.
Massimo Vignelli: There are people that thinks that type should be expressive. They have a different point of view from mine.

Although I was sad that we would no longer be doing anymore exercises. I was happy because it allowed me enough time to work on my projects. The exercises that we did do helped me into working with my projects. The Grid exercise especially helped with my magazine layout because its not as simple as it looks. In order to arrange text and pictures to fit on a page is a lot of work. Especially if you're working with a lot of text. The color exercise also played a role in my project. Knowing what complimentary colors are helped add to my playful/ Cosmo theme for the Pumpkin design.

Instant book
I've probably folded dozens of paper for this project, hoping to get the perfect fold. I didn't exactly know what I wanted to do my project on for the longest. At first I wanted to make up a story. I didn't really have a clue as to what to make my story about. So I finally decided to do a guide, called "How To Stop Being Miserable All The Time."
After I got the title I decided to focus on things that make me happy which would be easy to draw or find a glyph for. I composed a list of these five things and thought about what images I would use to portray it.
*Eat
*Love
*Laugh
*Have Sex
*Shop
*Smile
For "Eat" I decided to make a burger using the shape tools. For Love I used heart glyphs. For Laugh I used a fun font and said "HA HA HA." For Have Sex I used a glyph of a bed. For shop I also used the shape tool to draw a mall. And for smile I used a smiley glyph.
The hardest part of this project was getting the documents I made at home, to work open on the school's computer. Since adobe provides the updated free trial online and the school's adobe isn't upgraded, I had to start redoing some of my images. Though a hassle I was happy with the turn out.

My favorite part about doing these projects are the critiques. Its nice to see how everyone's work came out after seeing each other put it together. It also shows progress and growth in our work. Being in a class where theres only one guy, its interesting to see his masculine approach to our projects. I guess it kind of shows balance because we're all from different backgrounds and walks of life so to see how each other topics and layouts vary its nice. Im really excited to see how everyone does on their final project. It's really a bittersweet moment.

I'm a huge fan of magazines. Even though I enjoy reading the articles it the execution of image and text which catches my eyes first. One of my favorite magazines to read is Cosmopolitan. I love how their layouts are always playful, girly and bright. So when I first started this project I thought how can I incorporate that. If I saw my article in a magazine would I stop and pay attention.
This is the finished product. Instead of going for the traditional orange background I decided to do a green background. With fun colored circles to symbolize the round shapes of pumpkins. Im really happy how it turned out.

I loved this exercise. When I was younger I had to have the 120 Crayola pack and dozens of coloring books. I was obsessed with colors and making everything look pretty :) So this exercise was awesome.
This exercise also made me want to look into the Color Theory on the class blog http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/01/28/color-theory-for-designers-part-1-the-meaning-of-color/
The concept of Color Theory for Designers and how it relates to peoples emotions always intrigued me. My favorite color is purple. According to the Color Theory purple symbolizes royalty. "It’s a combination of red and blue, and takes on some attributes of both. It’s associated with creativity and imagination, too." It also states how darker purples represent wealth and royalty while lighter purples are associated with romance.
For this project I used complementary pastels. I like how the deeper the color the darker the grey shading is. It looks appealing to the eyes. I also like that about the different blues and yellow squares.
This has to be one of my favorite exercises.
3.
THE GRID IS THE HARDEST PROJECT EVERRRRRRRRR! Its not as easy as it looks and its not as hard as the book makes it. I prefer the projects over the exercises because I'm able to show my creativity but the exercises help give useful tools and tips. Another thing I enjoy is going through the exercises step by step in class because it helps the time go by faster and its easier than reading the book.
Every time I open my Cosmopolitan magazine, I go to the articles to see how they used the grid to organize their sheet. I didn't realize how much work goes into arranging headlines and text because its not as easy as it looks.

Like any other project, I was very indecisive about which approach to take with this one. Compared to the other design, I definitely like this one much better. Its a simple clash of my love for bold colors and my love for prints. I chose these colors especially because each represent my certain qualities. The red represents my passion and feistiness. The yellow represents my vibrants bubbly personality. And the black represents my mysterious side. I wanted to take the approach of an invitation because I love how they look organized and classy.
Being that this was my first time using inDesign, I actually like it. I've owned Adobe Photoshop previous to this class but this was just as easy to use. The use of glyphs, shapes and color really helped my project to come along. I'm really deciding to put this on foam board because I absolutely love it, and its one of my first projects in this class.
